41st Cambridge Folk Festival

Memories 5

Adrian Scott

Woo Hoo, what a great Cambridge it was, as a relative veteran of about 11 or 12 years, sure the Guinness has made me forget two or three, can I say to start with, that this year was awesome. Credit must go to the committee who on paper had the line up all wrong but on the day got it all right. The first night (Thurs) was the best so far, the right amount of drinking songs, the right amount of toe tapping and then Hayseed Dixie to finish the evening leaving everyone needing and wanting more. Add to that the subliminal Martha Wainwright, who if you actually took time to sit and talk to her, like I did, you would find was as stimulating a person offstage as on.

Friday, again on paper may have looked a little staid and lacking in so called traditional folk fare but was even better, KT Tunstall, quite humbly told us how important a festival it is for those appearing and the sheer joy on her face at being on the main stage was worth the entrance alone. Then take some ageing seventies poppy boy next door boys, who I was saying (yes I admit it) that I would walk 500 miles not to listen to them, and lo and behold one more convert. Me like The Proclaimers, more chance of me finding rocking horse shit on Brighton beach, or so I thought.

Saturday, I must admit, after staying up and singing until 4.30 am, with a guy called Diamond Dave was a little of a blur, ok I can’t hardly remember a thing. Apologies to the parents in the nearby tents with young children, but we middle aged, normally normal people, do like to go wild at folk festivals and sing along to a Bob Dylan song or 30.

By the way, anyone who knows Diamond Dave (he appeared in the club tent on Sunday) please email me on adrianscott77@hotmail.com , the guy was a star, and I have compiled a tribute cd with unknown people like Bob Dylan, Christy Moore, Bruce Springsteen covering his hits.

Sunday, it must be said was taken up with talking to a rather lovely young lady, who you lovers of romance will be pleased to know, I am now in a full blown romance with. But I can now recommend Christy Moore as background music to woo to.

So all in all, a great festival, enough fiddles and arran jumpers for some, enough world, roots, blues, beer, Columbian woodbines for the rest of us. Roll on next year and another five hour wait outside Cambridge booking office, oh and for those of you, who are going around saying it was “just alright” look around, smell the flowers and think how exciting your life is when you don’t have Cambridge to go to.

Well done the organisers, committee and web sites like this for allowing a few old farts like me, the pleasure of great music, great company and a chance to write badly
