40th Cambridge Folk Festival

Susana Seivane

I'll hold my hand up and admit that before I saw the artist list for this year's festival, I'd never heard of Susana Seivane. It was a gap I'm glad I filled.

It turns out that Seivane is part of the Iberian wave that has become a fixture at Cambridge in recent years. It also turns out that her weapon of choice is the bagpipes, not an instrument that ranks up there amongst my favourites.

Don't get me wrong there's plenty of bagpipe music that I really do like, it's just that it's not often first choice on my cd player. Seivane changed that for a while.

I think it's the Moorish touches that makes you want to hear more(sic). Seivane can do the Celtic and medieval bits along with the best of them, but it's the Moorish flouirishes that set this apart for me. There's one tune, Xoto Dos 28 Puntos that shows that less really is more.

Susana has moved into my consciousness in a big way and I look forward to seeing her play live.
