Fiddlers'
BidIf the arms race was driven by fiddle music, Shetland would be a world power, correction, Shetland would be the world power.
Forget the oil, when it comes to production, great fiddle bands is the key export and Fiddlers' Bid is another in a long line.
Add in a driving rhythm section and a touch of harp and piano and you've got yourself some really good entertainment.
The core of the band, Maurice, Christopher, Kevin and Michael Ferrie, together with Davie Keith formed whilst still at school. They were taught by a number of great fiddlers and got to play alongside them. Subsequently they added guitar and bass, from Steve Yarrington and Dave Coles.
Tragedy struck in '96 when Michael Ferrie died. Later a new fiddle player, Andrew Gifford was recruited and harpist Catriona McKay completed the lineup.
I've yet to be disappointed by a Shetland band at Cambridge and I'm not expecting it to start here.
