Telephone Bill & The Smooth Operators

#NK You've been involved with Cambridge with many different hats.

#NB The first time was when I was fourteen. I was a gate steward back when the fence was four foot high and it used to get trampled down in the evening. Then I worked in the bar, ran the Club Tent for a while. Got booked as a duo with Ann. Played the mainstage with Baby Whale and then Telephone Bill.

After that I presented the television series for BBC2. Now I present and produce the Radio 2 coverage and the live concert on Saturday night. I haven't done the loos…but I'm not bothered. It's been a great part of my life.

#NK Which role has given you the most satisfaction?

#NB There's no hesitation to that. I loved doing a television thing on a big crane talking to a camera with the festival ground below me. That was a buzz. I love the radio programme because it's such a buzz having to turn it around so quickly. There is absolutely nothing in my memory that surpasses Telephone Bill, 1980, Mainstage 2 with the big band, the five of us plus three other musicians and that was an absolute blast.

#NK Cheers
