#N
In Chelmsford 123 and Who Dares Wins, you were in the more cool
up front roles whilst Phil seemed to have the smug, sleazy characters
and here in the band you're up front again.
#R I've been trying to encourage Phil into the middle, but today for some reason he said he's stand at the side. It's all very light hearted, a bit rude and good fun, but it hasn't helped me much further down the road. I keep on getting asked, "When are you going to write a song that isn't funny?" There's one song we do, "And I wake Up" which is quite a sad song, which ends with the line "Who the fuck are you?" A lot of people say that it ruins the song. I say that's the joke and they say it needs to change for it to be the song I'm talking about writing.
#N Do you feel pressure to be funny?
#R Sometimes. Today we followed the Crofters, a very talented band. It's easy to follow something like that because we are different. Student gigs can be a pain, because they want jokes as well. Then you end up with a five minute chat between songs. Here you can just go song, song, song, which is what I've wanted.
#N How did this gig come about?
#R A friend of mine called Tim Loins is an events manager. He's put on shows for us before. I asked him if there was any chance. He said it'd be pretty tough as we weren't that well known as Death By Country and we'd changed our name to Short & Curlies, 'cause I'm Curly & Phil's short. Next year we'll be Fatty & Baldy. It took some convincing. They said we could Thursday Night and an early slot. So we're being boxed off as an unknown quantity. There's talk of us doing this stage again next year, possibly on the Friday.
#N Having got this together again, is there anything
else coming?
#R I'd like to say yes. We're all around at the moment so we can talk. Everyone has other things going. Most of the band are professional musicians so if a good gig comes up they take it and a good pub gig with no money involved and a good curry doesn't pay the bills so the timing's got to be right.
#N It also seems that you can get away with stuff in song that you can't as a joke. It's eight o'clock and you've just got away with songs about sex, drugs and more sex. You listen to some of the songs that Eliza and/or Kate sing and they're filthy.
#R It's very true. You can also repeat a joke in a chorus and people will laugh again, tell the same joke straight away and you'll soon get heckled. And it'll still be funny further down the line. So long as it's tuneful, well played and funny, people will appreciate it.
#N To bring things to an end, have you thought of doing covers in the set?
#R We're happy doing our own songs really. I want to become known for songs that are ours, something that comes from us.
